The purpose of validating assessment tools is to ensure that all components, performance standards, and evidence of performance and knowledge are covered by your assessment methods. Therefore, whenever you acquire new educational resources, you must perform validation of assessment tools before students use them. There's no need to wait for your next five-year validation cycle. Check new materials as soon as possible to ensure they are suitable for student use.

Nevertheless, this isn't the only time to do this type of validation. Perform assessment tool validation also when you:

- Revise your resources
- Include new training products on scope
- Evaluate your course with training product updates
- Detect your learning resources as a risk during your risk assessment

Pay attention to the tasks in the unit requirements and ensure they are addressed by the evaluation task. For example, in the unit CHCECE032 Caring for Babies and Toddlers, one performance evidence requirement asks students to:

- Change diapers
- Prepare and feed bottles, clean feeding equipment
- Prepare solid food and feed babies
- Respond to baby signs and cues properly
- Get babies ready for sleep and settle them
- Monitor and encourage age-appropriate physical exploration and gross motor skills

Common Pitfalls

Asking students to describe the nappy-changing process for babies under 12 months old does not meet the unit requirement. Unless the unit requirement is meant to assess check here underpinning knowledge (i.e., knowledge-based evidence), students should be carrying out the tasks.
